When it comes to horse racing literature, thoroughbred racing really is the sport of kings and harness racing seems to be the sport of…. farmers? One look at any of the online bookstores gives you an idea of the huge difference in published literature on the two sports. A search at Amazon.com for horse racing yields 1242 books, most of which seem related to thoroughbreds. A narrowed search for harness racing yields 76 books, the majority of which are out of print or unavailable. A narrowed search for thoroughbred racing brings 245 books, most of which are available. A quick trip to any of the other bookstore websites yields essentially the same ratio. The difference in the number of books is unavoidable I guess, considering the huge advantage that thoroughbred racing has in popularity and publicity.
A quick
look at my own horse racing library shows that even though harness racing is my
preferred sport, I seem to own more books on thoroughbred racing (these are
only the books I could find laying around, I have boxes of stored books that I
haven’t looked in for years). Most of my
harness library is composed of books that were published years ago. Also, a
majority of my library is composed of Al Stanley products, many of which were
available only through mail order.

As you can
see, I have more thoroughbred books than harness books, even though I have
probably bet less than 200 thoroughbred races in my life (I bet half that many
harness races in a day!). My reason for buying the thoroughbred books has
always been the hope that some nuggets of information would pertain to harness
racing and help my harness handicapping. It seems that most of my harness
information these days comes from the internet rather than books. My ‘new’
harness library consists of articles that I save as pdf’s and store online.
I’ve even started to scan and save as pdf’s some of the books and pamphlets
from my old library. It’s just a more efficient way to save and store
information. If anyone has any, or knows of any good books or articles on
harness racing, let us know. Just leave a comment below or post on our Google
Groups site.
Hello

The basic Stanleys Law and the chapter of clocking most influenced my handicapping of harness as I spent 9 straight years with about only 10 off nights at either Hazel park, DRC or Northville clocking and applying his methods along with a few of my own inventions(lasix angles, bike changes, off-track champions, and double-trouble horses)
I also have a few Thoroughbred books that are the same as yours...One work of particular interest to Horse-Players is a work called "The Degenerates of Lake Tahoe" an engrossing study of persistence in the Social World Of Horse Race Gambling by Peter Lang P.H.D....I highly recommend this one..as it says on it's back cover "The researcher identifies and describes the social-psychological components involved in sustained participation at gambling....
